Before you roll your eyes at me for reviewing this film, can you grab a popcorn and watch it for once? Because we get to see good and genuine movies only once in a while.
So what's Power Pandi all about? Love, affection and relationships and the way they intertwine in our life. The film's main protagonist, Rajkiran, is ' Single', lives with his son and family. As like any normal family, disputes arise and the father - son duo tread on a rough patch. So what happens when both of them are frustrated ? The answer forms the crux of the story.
If you think this is a sequel to Manjappai, it is not. Our hero is matured, young in mind and at heart. How often do we see parents accepting their flaws ? How often do we see a 60 year old man venturing in a bullet escapade? And how often, do we get to see a subtle, matured, light hearted love story on screen? Well, Power Pandi promises it all and delivers them with ease.
The movie is completely unpredictable. In one scene, we get to see Rajkiran's anger, immediately followed by his realization and acceptance of it. Before you conclude that he's a man of reason, he gets drunk and throws up a fight with his son. And before we sink in our empathy for this old man, he flies off to see his first love, in an attempt of self realization. Could a story be more interesting than this?
The cast deserves a big applause - It's refreshing to see Revathy on screen. She scores in the way she emulates her emotions for her first love. If you think it's squishy washy teary eyed first love recalled, it's not and it's where Revathy scores. A seasoned performance by Prasanna makes you nod with him when he tries to reason out with his father. DD - way to go girl. The entire theatre applauded your dialogue delivery. Chaya Singh - a perfect fit in the family picture. Dhanush and Madonna Sebastian - a perfect underplay, indeed.
The music may not be great. But it chimes with the context of the film. ' Ven pani malare ' scores both in music and in lyrics. The instant questioning by the kids gives you a whole hearted laugh.
Dhanush has tried his best to eliminate all logical fallacies and this is where the film falls short. Certain scenes lack reality and the fight scenes are rhetorically scriptured.
But can you narrate a love story without a shed of tear ? Without clichéd poems and duet songs? Without hustled conversations and arm wrestling fights? Without layered dialogues which leaves you scratching your head? Well, Power Pandi delivers it all.
In short, it was a huge relief for me to watch such a cute and beautiful love story after an intense movie last week. Thanks Dhanush, for restoring my faith in good screenplay !!
